Margaret Smith
“Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist”
(Pablo Picasso, Spanish Artist)
A nature lover to the core, Margaret is inspired by Nature and all its complexity. She grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe where she was always outdoors with the cows, her pony, the chickens, ducks and dogs. Or she could be found chasing butterflies and collecting grasses and pods from trees. But then, like everybody else, she grew up and had to exchange these for life as an adult.
She graduated with a BA Fine Arts (Honours) from UNISA and also holds a teacher’s diploma which she obtained in Zimbabwe. After teaching art for 30 years, Margaret has retired to her easel where she spends time every day. She was heading the Art Department at the St Stithians as well as Roedean Schools, both large private schools in Johannesburg.
Now, living in Stilbaai, home of the renowned Blombos Cave, she is still inspired by the wonderful world of nature. She simply cannot resist picking up a brush and recording the little cameos of life. Her subjects range from landscapes to birds, animals, children playing on the beach as well as images that she photographs on her travels. The sea with its variety of birds and shells, rocks and pools, the fynbos, the river, the quaint settlers’ houses and the Cape Dutch influence around her are her focus.
She works mainly in oil and acrylic and uses her camera to record scenes and images. Margaret paints in her studio at her home where she used to give classes to both adults and children. She has also presented workshops in Stilbaai to a group of keen artists, but nowadays she paints just for the love of it.
Her work could be seen at various exhibitions in Stilbaai such as those held by the Stilbaai Art Association and Arts Alive Stilbaai. She also had selected work on exhibition at the Southern Cape Art Exhibition in the Strydom Gallery in George.
Margaret belongs to Stilbaai Fine Art Focus where she ardently contributes to the common interest and greater good of all the members of the group.
