“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way – things I had no words for”
(Georgia O'Keeffe, American Artist)
For quite a number of years now Anita Barnard has been privileged to be a resident of Stilbaai, an inspiring seaside village in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Her earliest childhood memories are of the sea, of searching for shells and observing all kinds of interesting little creatures in the rock pools. Of lots of seaweed washed out on the beach and most of all of the scary waves thundering down on the shore when the tide is at its highest.
Anita believes that she has inherited her interest in the sea from her great Grandfather who, even after having survived being shipwrecked, still preferred to live close to the sea.
She would like to communicate to you through her paintings the way she experiences life in Stilbaai on the edge between land and sea. All the activities that adults and children indulge playing and having fun on the beach. She would also like to show you the many different facets of her home town. Thus, by means of small paintings, mementos of times and places, she tells her story.
Anita says here at the coast everything is coloured and transformed by the ever changing light, seasons, tides and weather. Between these elements she considers light to be the most illusive and magical quality to capture successfully. She prefers to use acrylics or oil paint to create her small paintings on stretched canvas.
To her mind acrylic paint is a very versatile medium and ideal for experimenting. An almost playful medium, while oil paint lends itself to a slow building of layers of rich colours. She feels that the coastal environment offers her lots of opportunities to use both mediums in her work.
She graduated from the University of Stellenbosch. She also studied Art and acquired a Teacher’s Diploma from UNISA.
This talented painter accepts work on commission. She has already produced a number of paintings on request with which her clients have been very pleased. Thus, if you are looking for someone to paint something special for you, talk to Anita Barnard.
For more than 17 years, she has offered art classes and is still going strong. These are mostly individual classes which means that her students receive her undivided attention. Although she has only limited space to exhibit her art, she welcomes visitors who are interested in her work, either to peruse, or to buy. Make an appointment and meet this interesting painter in her own environment.
She is a valued member of Stilbaai Fine Art Focus. In this group she can share ideas and thoughts with other members, learn from them as well as offer and receive encouragement to continue practising her art.
